The Holy Door

While it is closed between Holy or Jubilee Years, the Holy Door of Notre-Dame de Québec remains, nonetheless, a place of prayer greatly appreciated by pilgrims, parishioners and friends of Notre-Dame de Québec.

The garden adjacent to the Holy Door is open during Church visiting hours throughout the summer season. Pilgrims may approach and touch the door. It is from here that the tender and merciful face of Christ looks upon all who approach Him in faith.

When visiting during a time not designated a Holy Year, the Holy Door is best viewed from inside the church. It reminds us that we are a people placed under the special protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a people in whom the Holy Spirit lives, a people imbued with the light of the Resurrection.

The work of Montréal sculptor Jules Lasalle, Québec’s Holy Door was authorized by Pope Benedict XVI and was blessed and inaugurated on December 8, 2013 by his Eminence Gérald Cyprien Cardinal Lacroix.

Throughout the celebrations of the 350 Anniversary of Notre-Dame de Québec (2014) and the Jubilee of Mercy (2016), hundreds of thousands of visitors entered this door, at times in silent contemplation, at times in great awe and wonder.

The parish gratefully acknowledges the contributions of the Knights of Columbus and the Groupe Dallaire, whose financial support have made possible the creation and installation of the Holy Door.
